On Saturday I went with one other animal chiropractor to adjust two horses at a local barn. One of them was a 25-year old mare, a Thoroughbred that raced many years ago, and now was just ridden for jumping and pleasure riding. The horse hadn’t been adjusted in several years, and was certainly overdue.
As we watched her walk, she had a right-sided swing and her right hind leg that went inward. We adjusted areas in her pelvis, lumbar & thoracic spine and took her back out for a short walk. You could see a lot of improvement, which was so great to see so fast. Even her hind leg moved much straighter.
When we checked the rest of her spine, we found that her neck had difficulty bending around to the left. The poor horse could not bend her neck to the left very well, and as she did, she really twisted her head awkwardly. It wasn’t as balanced as when she turned to the right. Upon checking her, we could feel lack of movement (subluxation) in her mid neck, at the C3-C4 level. I adjusted her and it improved quite a bit. Dr. Abby then adjusted her C2 and that helped even more. The mare could immediately turn her neck much better, and equally to both sides.
Do you think that horse needed that adjustment? Certainly! And a day later, she’s probably feeling much better, moving much better, and probably is more relaxed. When she gets ridden next, she’ll probably perform better for her owner, and her jumping will be better. Her nervous system is functioning better, and the end results may even be some positive things that we cannot even see. But on the inside, she’s better.
Chiropractic care is not about pain relief, it’s about freeing up any disconnection in your central nervous system. The end result can be amazing, whether it’s emotional, chemical or physical.
