I’m over 50, mostly crunchy, I question all medical things that are “mainstream” and always strive for natural healthy alternatives. Years ago, when it came time to think about a mammogram, I wasn’t going to just fall into the system of having it done annually, as it just told me about a problem after it was fully developed. It didn’t make sense. And then I heard about thermography … and that made sense.
When it comes to breast health, early detection is key—but so is choosing tools that support your body gently, naturally, and without unnecessary risk. That’s where breast thermography comes in (and guess what, we are offering it in our office in August, see below for info!).
While mammograms have long been the standard, more women are now exploring thermography as a radiation-free, non-invasive screening tool that can detect subtle changes in breast tissue before structural changes occur.
Breast thermography (also called digital infrared thermal imaging) uses a specialized camera to detect heat patterns and blood flow in breast tissue. These thermal patterns can indicate inflammation, abnormal vascular activity, or changes in lymphatic drainage—all early indicators of potential problems.
It’s not a replacement for mammography—but it offers unique insights that traditional imaging cannot.
So, what are some of the benefits?
Radiation-Free & Pain-Free
Unlike mammograms, thermography doesn’t compress breast tissue or expose the body to radiation. That makes it ideal for:
- Younger women with dense breast tissue
- Women wanting frequent monitoring
- Those avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure
Detects Physiological Changes—Early
While mammograms detect structural changes (like lumps), thermography picks up functional changes, like:
- Abnormal blood vessel activity
- Areas of inflammation or heat
- Hormonal imbalances
These changes often appear years before a tumor forms, allowing for truly proactive care.
Ideal for Ongoing Monitoring
Thermography is a powerful way to monitor:
- Fibrocystic breast changes
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Lifestyle and dietary impact on breast health
It provides a visual map of changes over time, giving you and your care team real insight into what your body needs.
Great for All Ages & Risk Levels
Whether you’re in your 20s or post-menopausal, thermography is safe and helpful. It’s especially valuable for:
- Women with a family history of breast cancer
- Those with implants (where compression is problematic)
- Women wanting a whole-body or integrative wellness approach
Thermography Fits a Wellness Lifestyle
If you’re already committed to clean eating, reducing toxic exposure, and supporting your body’s natural rhythms, thermography is in alignment with that philosophy. It focuses on early insight, not fear-based reaction, and empowers you to take action early through diet, detox, chiropractic care, lymphatic drainage, and more.
As a chiropractor, I love how thermography supports nervous system insight and inflammation awareness. It’s one more way we can read the body’s subtle signals—and offer care before there’s a crisis.
Breast thermography is not a standalone diagnostic tool, but it’s a fantastic complement to other forms of breast health monitoring. Most importantly, it puts you back in the driver’s seat—offering information, insight, and empowerment.
