FAQs

Chiropractic patient with newborn
We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions we hear from our patients, so you can feel informed and confident about your chiropractic journey. From understanding how chiropractic adjustments work to what you can expect during your appointment, we’re here to provide clarity and support every step of the way.

Chiropractic is a safe, natural, drugless method of healing that is utilized by millions of people of all ages. Chiropractic utilizes the inborn healing powers of the body to allow an individual to function at their maximum potential. A chiropractic adjustment removes interference in the nervous system by correcting misalignments in the spine (called vertebral subluxations) in order to allow this complete expression of health. Chiropractic is a different approach to health care; it is not a treatment for disease or conditions. Everybody deserves a healthy spine that is free of nerve interference. At Active Life Chiropractic, we recognize the body’s own natural recuperative powers to heal and rejuvenate itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

You will be given a chiropractic examination, computerized spinal scan, and digital x-rays (if not pregnant). This first visit will take about 45-90 minutes depending on your past & current health history, as well as your age.

On the second & third visit, the doctor will discuss the findings determined from your exam, and a personalized care plan will be tailored for you. Depending on your goals for care, we will give you an estimate of how long it will take to make any spinal corrections, we will discuss home exercises and stretches, and will make recommendations. Generally the second visit is approximately 20-30 minutes. Any visit after that will be shorter depending on your personal situation.

Pain is only one way the body communicates stress — and often it’s not the first signal.

The nervous system controls and coordinates every function in the body, including movement, digestion, sleep, immune responses, and overall adaptability. Many people — especially children — can have areas of tension or restricted movement in the spine without obvious discomfort.

Chiropractic care is not just about pain relief. It’s about supporting healthy nervous system communication and helping the body adapt more efficiently to daily physical, chemical, and emotional stressors.

We utilize tools such as Insight™ nervous system scans during your initial visit to help assess patterns of stress and function. This allows us to make personalized recommendations based on how your nervous system is adapting — not simply whether you feel pain. (see First Visit).

Many families choose proactive chiropractic care because they value function and long-term wellness, not just symptom management.

No. How long you choose to continue care is always your decision.

Our recommendations are based on your individual goals, your nervous system findings, and how your body is responding to care. Some people seek chiropractic care for short-term relief during a specific season of stress or discomfort. Others choose ongoing care because they value proactive nervous system support and long-term wellness.

Just like exercise, healthy nutrition, or dental check-ups, the benefits of chiropractic care tend to build with consistency. After your initial phase of care, we’ll discuss your progress and outline options that make sense for you — whether that’s periodic check-ins, supportive wellness care, or simply returning as needed.

There is no “one-size-fits-all” schedule. Our role is to guide you with clear recommendations and education so you can make informed decisions that feel right for you and your family.

Yes. Pediatric chiropractic care, when performed by a properly trained chiropractor, is considered very safe and gentle.

Adjustments for infants and children are extremely light and specific — often using no more pressure than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. There is no forceful twisting or cracking involved in infant care.

Several studies have reported a low incidence of adverse events in pediatric chiropractic care, and most published research describes it as safe when delivered appropriately. As with any healthcare decision, we always encourage open communication and collaboration with your child’s pediatrician.

Our focus is on supporting healthy nervous system function, reducing tension, and improving spinal mobility in a way that is developmentally appropriate. Every child is evaluated individually, and care recommendations are tailored specifically to their needs.

Parents are always present during adjustments, and we welcome questions at any time.

Chiropractic care does not treat or cure medical conditions such as colic, ear infections, or ADHD. Those diagnoses should always be evaluated and managed in collaboration with your child’s pediatrician.

However, many parents seek pediatric chiropractic care because the nervous system plays a central role in regulation — including sleep patterns, digestion, immune responses, focus, and behavior.

If there is tension or restricted movement in the spine, it may affect how efficiently the nervous system communicates with the rest of the body. Our goal is to gently reduce stress on the nervous system and support better overall function.

While every child is different and outcomes vary, some families report improvements in comfort, sleep, feeding, focus, or overall regulation while under care. We view chiropractic as a supportive, complementary approach — not a replacement for medical treatment.

We are always happy to collaborate with your child’s healthcare team to ensure the best possible care.

Many parents bring their children in because of a specific concern — such as feeding challenges, posture changes, sports injuries, or discomfort. Others choose chiropractic care proactively, even when their child seems “fine.”

Because the nervous system controls growth, coordination, digestion, sleep, and behavior, subtle signs of stress may show up in different ways. These can include tension through the neck or shoulders, difficulty turning the head evenly, frequent falls, poor posture, trouble settling, or ongoing physical stress from sports or screen time.

That said, not every child “needs” chiropractic care in the same way. Our role is to assess how your child’s spine and nervous system are functioning and provide clear, individualized recommendations. Some families choose short-term care for a specific concern, while others value periodic check-ins to support long-term wellness.

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to answer questions and help you decide whether an evaluation makes sense for your child.

No. Chiropractors do not manually “turn” breech babies.

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment used during pregnancy to support pelvic balance and healthy nervous system function. When the pelvis is balanced and surrounding muscles and ligaments have less tension, it may create more space for baby to move and position naturally.

Our role is to support the mother’s biomechanics and nervous system — not to directly manipulate fetal position.

If a baby remains breech, we encourage open communication with your OB or midwife to discuss appropriate medical options. Chiropractic care is considered a complementary approach and works best as part of a collaborative care team.
