Have you heard of The China Study? It’s a great book that is about, of all things…the China Study! If you have any interest in health or nutrition, this is a must read. If you have any interest in preventing cancer, it’s a must read. If you have any interest in changing your life, it’s a must read. Much of what I have learned in the book is not really new, it’s all reinforcing beliefs of how incredibly important nutrition is, and how incredibly dangerous sugar, animal products and chemicals are. Not because they may be fattening, but because they literally can and will kill you. Someone recommended the book to me, and I downloaded it on my IPod and have been listening to it over the past few months (that’s listening to my IPod about once a week). I now probably need to purchase the actually hard cover book so I can display it in my office.
We are now approaching the time of year when sugar consumption is on the rise: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s the candy makers best time of year. It’s the time of year when families struggle with sugar consumption, trying to get their children not to eat so much candy. An interesting observation we have seen is that kids and adults who eat healthy food regularly often get a stomach ache and feel fatigued or hyper very soon after one bad meal of processed food or a sugar-laden dessert. I know if I eat bad or eat too much sugar at night, I have a hard time falling asleep. Luckily, this only happens on rare occasions which allows me to notice it when I do eat poorly.
At the same time, people who eat these bad foods regularly do not get the instant, noticeable stomach ache or fatigue. They can eat candy or deserts on a regular basis and it doesn’t affect them. However, they suffer other long term problems like cancer, heart disease and diabetes, among other problems.
On Halloween night (tonight) if your child eats sugar and doesn’t get a stomach ache or become hyper or fatigued, that is a problem. He or she is being fed bad food too regularly. If your child does suffer from eating the candy, then their overall diet is relatively better.
Either way, end the suffering by using healthy alternatives. Make this year a happy, healthy one for your whole family. Switch to a whole foods based diet. Read (or listen to) The China Study, you will be glad you did.
